Project Narrative
SIMaid began responding to the widespread food security crisis in East Africa back in August (2011). Through our partner in Kenya we are helping provide food, medical and shelter assistance to families and individuals severely impacted by the extended drought in East Africa. The north-eastern region of Kenya, like the rest of the Horn of Africa, has experienced severe drought together with an influx of refugees from adjoining regions. Since August gifts received into our 'Emergency Fund' have been allocated to this response and will continue to be until there is reason to focus on another emergency situation.
Together with our Kenyan partner we have developed a specific longer term project titled 'Kenya Drought Relief' to continue the relief work as well as to help families and communities access clean water and rebuild their food and income security. Emergency Feeding and medical attention will continue to be needed in many parts of northern and north-eastern Kenya well into 2012. The majority of the people in these regions rely heavily on their livestock for food and income but the prolonged drought has dried up wells and water holes and devastated the vegetation as well as the cattle, sheep and goat numbers. This project will focus initially on on-going food and medical relief as well as deepening of wells and repairing pumps to provide safe drinking water and water for livestock and the growing of essential food.
