Project Need: $361,950
Nonhlanhla Ndebele is a cheerful 12 year old girl who is in grade 7 at Gokwe primary school. Her gracious smile hides the painful story that is her life.
Both her parents passed away five years ago, at which time all five children went to live with their paternal grandparents. The grandparents are elderly and they struggle to feed the family let alone send them to school. When school fees became unaffordable Nonhlanda’s class teacher brought her to the Operation Neighbour Care project and she was given assistance to pursue her studies.
Nonhlanhla is a bright hopeful pupil, loves athletics, and does well in running races. She is now boarding with her class teacher Madam Matambo who stays at the school. This has cut the 11km she used to walk to and from school each day. She visits her family each weekend to assist them with weeding the fields, gardening and other household chores.
Nonhlanhla wants to be a nurse when she finishes school, both to provide for her elderly grandparents and help nurse sick people.
This project providing on-going care for those affected by HIV and AIDS in rural Gokwe, by trained local volunteers as well as reducing the rate of infection through education.
