Project Goal: $83,781
Lankoandé Denis was born in May 2010. He was the seventh child of the family, including three who had died. The family lives in the Piel sector, about one to two kilometres from the health Centre.
He was taken to the clinic on 15th March 2011 after a long illness. On arrival he had completely lost his appetite, he weighed 4.97 kg with a height of 66 cm. The weight / height ratio showed that he needed to be hospitalised immediately. After 21 days, the child was well and had regained appetite. At his departure, he weighed 5.46 kg.
After a week back at home, his parents had abandoned the treatment and a home visit was made in order to retrieve the child before it was too late. We found the child in a poor condition with a new loss of appetite and weight loss. Lankoandé’s parents lacked the means to return to the Centre but we reassured them that we could take care of him.
On 30th April 2011, his weight was a staggering 4.6 kg and a height of 65 cm. He had shrunk in size and weight. We placed him a nasal gastric tube and it was only after two weeks when he became interested in food. By the third week, the child was radiant with joy and had gained weight. He left the hospital with a weight of 5.43 kg and 66 cm.
This time we made sure that his parents were disciplined and strict with his treatment, and at eight weeks he weighed 7.56 kg and measured 68 cm or a weight/height index of 85%.
