The development of the Orphan Care program at Chilumba has been watched by the project co-ordinator over the last three years.

Whilst we have seen dramatic improvements of our HBC patients due to anti-retroviral (ARVs) treatment, there are still some for whom HIV has taken such a grip that even ARVs are too little, too late and the support from our HBC program is so vital.

She has little experience of a stable family life with her parents divorcing when she was small. 

Mike recently took one of the home-based care patients from Naotcha to the hospital because even the local minibuses don’t go anywhere near where she lives

The Orphan Care program has been running quite smoothly over the last few months providing assistance to those in need.

In the midst of undertaking an evaluation exercise for our orphan care program we are working hard to make sure the children and youth involved are given an equal voice alongside other members of the community, including the local chiefs and government officials.

On first meeting Amosi* there didn’t seem to be anything too unusual about this newborn baby but as his story unfolded it became clear that not all was as it should be.

Thokozani lives with her grand- parents. We know nothing of her father, while her mother, re- married, is unable to include her in her new life....
